Margaritas - on the rocks - with salt

It's true - the margarita is quite heftily consumed when we are in New York - and when I say we, I mean me and my cousin Janet ( although recently she is moving more towards the Bloody Mary) so here are a few places we've had Margaritas......you might want to try them too.

First off - I always said the best place for a margarita was Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill - sadly now closed.

It felt right to be drinking them in there, possibly might have had something to do with the food served and the colour scheme of the restaurant but they were good......
Jilly managed to put 3 away one lunchtime, or was it 4, I can't remember I was under the table.
I'm hopeful that the new restaurant Gato opening in February might offer a good one too - but we'll have to see.

So where else.......another Bobby Flay restaurant that served fabulous margaritas ( bar staff obviously trained well) was Bar Americain.  This is a fabulous place to eat too, if a tad out of our budget now - last time we were there the great Mario Batali came in to eat and the kitchen staff momentarily stood still in awe.

Bar Americain is  at 152 W. 52nd Street

Another great place for a margarita is Cafeteria 119 7th Ave.
Quite often the first place we eat in when we arrive in the city - their margaritas really hit the spot.
If I remember correctly the bar man was more than happy to discuss all the tequilas with me and what was the best - I can't remember exactly what he said was the best but I know it tasted great. :)

A couple of years ago after quite a heavy session in Cafeteria we decided we'd visit La Esquina for lunch the next day.

La Esquina is at 114 Kenmare Street and I loved it here

As we were ordering it was decided that we'd only be drinking Diet Coke that day but whoops - when we came to order we somehow ended up with 2 margaritas......

Margaritas at Joe's Pub were strong - strange system there - you eat, drink listen to a band and then you are ushered out as fast as you can go so they can set up for the next band.....toilets were uni-sex, didn't bother us but a lot of the men looked very uncomfortable........I loved it.
425 Lafayette Street

That's lime in there but it looks like it might have been a cookie.

Cafe Frida we fell upon one day trying to find somewhere to eat at short notice - the guacamole was fabulous washed down with - of course - a margarita. or two.
768 Amsterdam Avenue

and finally, for now anyway the frozen margarita......
Fabulous Brain Freeze at the South Street Seaport

We fancied a view of the bridge and a cup of tea but it was Happy Hour so we settled for a margarita instead - I can't for the life remember the name of the bar where we bought these but they were cheap  -$5  - and they were SO STRONG but we took in the fabulous view and pretended it was August instead of March.

and so - I'd be grateful for any suggestions for margarita drinking in New York as we will give everywhere a try!  Cheers folks.  More cocktails later.

Inspired

So many friends, and friends of friends ask us about our visits to New York.  We don't claim to be experts of course, we have never lived there, but every year we visit, we walk, we talk, we meet with old friends, we eat, dance, drink, laugh, and we settle in.  We put our feet under the table.
It's a great city, a favourite city, so in this blog I hope to share a few things for those friends who drop by and ask for places we might know to visit, and places to eat, where to stop for a beer, or do some shopping, where the best public toilets are, and how to avoid Starbucks. Of course I am very open to suggestions, corrections and ideas as we are always looking for new and exciting experiences.
The title of the blog inspired by the amazing song from Elbow - my first post.
